The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is the pre-eminent English language teaching (ELT/TEFL/TESOL) qualification in the world. It is administered by Cambridge University to initiate people into the field, or to up-skill those who are already working in it. It is the most widely recognised qualification of its kind with over 12,000 people completing it each year at over 300 approved centres world-wide.
This is an introductory course designed primarily for inexperienced teachers and is mainly concerned with the 'how' of teaching. It is considered to be a solid foundation for teaching English as a foreign language.
The course offers methods of English language analysis which will develop the EFL teacher's ability to make the language more meaningful to foreign learners at all levels. Syllabus and timetabling are also covered on the course. Teaching practice is an integral part of the course and takes place every day.
Why do CELTA?
CELTA suits a variety of people, of any age. You may be wanting a means of supporting yourself as you travel your way around the world, or you may be looking at a change of career, or maybe you have already made language teaching your career and want to further your own professional development. Whatever your motivations, CELTA can work for you.
What do I need?
This is a very intensive training course that will take you out of your normal life for four weeks (unless you take the part-time option). You will need to be focused, committed and organised.
You need to be either a native speaker of English or have a very high level of proficiency (C1 on the CEF / IELTS 7.5)
A degree in any background is normally expected, however high school qualifications may be acceptable at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates need to be 20, or at least 18 at the discretion of the centre.
