General English

This course is aimed at adult learners who want to improve their English for everyday situations, such as shopping, going to the cinema, meeting multi-cultural friends where English is the common language, traveling, etc. It is a highly communicative course that would be suitable for a wide range of people including those newly arrived in Dubai, those not in the workplace and those just wishing to improve their everyday social language skills.

Sponsoring organisations will see improved staff performance, motivation, improved working practices and cost savings, local and regional networking, and access to other professionals via a common language.

General English is offered at levels from complete Beginner through to Advanced. On application, students are assessed and assigned to the appropriate level course.

Duration: 36 hours
                Regular - over a period of six weeks 
                Intensive - over a period of three and a half weeks

Levels:

Beginner

This course is for adults and young adults. It provides a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary and the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for learners who have little or no experience of English, but who need to gain a basic knowledge of the language for daily life, travel and social situations.

Benefits: By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively in real-life situations

  • Recognise and use letters and numbers

  • Listen for main ideas and specific information

  • Use simple punctuation

  • Write about yourself and your family

  • Read personal information and descriptions of families, routines, the past, myths and legends

  • Use beginner grammar, adjectives, nouns, etc. 

  • Form questions

  • Recognise relationships between sounds and spellings, sentence stress, word stress 

  • Begin to develop some independent learning strategies to consolidate crucial points

Elementary

This is a course for adults and young adults who need English for everyday situations or travel. It combines rich international content, comprehensive grammar, and real-life functional language. It focuses on the key language skills to help you to become operational in English as soon as possible.

Benefits: By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Start listening and speaking immediately

  • Develop all four language skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking

  • Revise grammar and learn to speak confidently about the past, present and future

  • Develop reading for gist and specific information

  • Practise essential listening and pronunciation skills eg polite intonation, sentence stress, past tense endings, stress in questions, etc.

This course is for adults and young adults. Intermediate

This course is aimed at adults and young adults who want to improve their English for everyday use and travel. It is a highly communicative course that combines rich international content, comprehensive grammar and real-life functional language.

Benefits: By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Use authentic materials
  • Develop all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening
  • Develop concise and extensive writing skills eg informal / formal letters, thank you letters, creative writing
  • Improve pronunciation, eg word and sentence stress, rhythm and intonation, connected speech

  • Consolidate grammar and vocabulary from a previous level and move to Lower Intermediate level grammar and vocabulary

  • Use spoken and written activities based on task-based materials
  • Develop independent learning strategies to consolidate crucial points

Upper Intermediate
